Calling All Global Citizens By George O. Dadivas President, SanibLakas ng mga Aktibong Lingkod ng Inang Kalikasan (SALIKA), and Board Secretary, Eco-logical Waste Coalition This article was first published in Philippines News Digest, Vol. 1, No. 4, 2007, p. 24. AS GLOBAL CITIZENS of planet Earth we are all called to be more aware of what is happening in our natural surroundings and to be active stakeholders in the campaign for the protection of our now fragile environment. No less than the United Nations, the universal Catholic Church and various international religious and socio-eco-civic organizations, as well as enlightened and responsible governments and multinational firms have joined hands and bandwagons to sign bilateral and multilateral agreements to establish convergent protocols. Primarily the basic historic purpose of these developments isfor the conservation and preservation of our vast oceans, dying seas, dwindling fresh water resources, the damaged atmosphere and ozone layer, including our vanishing forest lands, together with the rare species of plants and animals. It is now an open secret that all of these -- denudation, pollution, degradation and other forms of disgusting and unending destruction of our environment were caused mainly by our fellow-humans' fatal ignorance, pathetic indifference and insatiable greed. The effect of these uncontrolled abuses of man upon the environment has taken its deadly toll on the people's health and the planet's radical climate changes. We are now experiencing worldwide the phenomenon of global warming which hsas produced extreme heat for longer periods in many unexpected locations. Small islands have started to sink in rising sea levels, and may soon disappear completely from the face of the earth. Each of us can help and give his or her small share of time and effort to save our lonely planet. There are various, even enjoyable, ways and means to do it, starting with our personal contributions. Let us all join in this global crusade of making and keeping our world a good and safe place to live in, now and for generations to come.
