Synergetic Leadership By Ed Aurelio C. Reyes Prof. Reyes is one of the foremost champions in the Philippines of the serious study and conscious application of the synergism principle on various fields of human concern. He taught synergism-oriented subjects of Applied Cosmic Anthropology, the doctoral program of Asian Social Institute (ASI) in Manila. This article was first written as part of the author's The PSE (People's Self-Empowerment) Chal-lenge, which came out in 1996 in a pilot edition with a very limited number of copies. BUILDING and running a healthy organization, that is, one that runs on dynamic systems based on three synergies in its consolidation, operations and conti¬nuing growth, needs to develop Synergetic Leadership. Let’s tackle what Synergetic Leadership is not before we tackle what it is. A “Superman/Martyr” cannot provide Synergetic Leadership. Such would tend to do alone everything that the entire organization ought to be doing together. This turns the entire membership into a fans club or, worse, simple list of nominal, bored, and indifferent members, Apparently, this type of “leader” doesn’t even need an organization and would perhaps do better with a fans club. The reason usually offered for type of “leadership” is that it is often easier to do the job yourself than to convince others to do it. This style can indeed get the job at hand done, but it cannot build an organization that can sustainably go forward in its mission. An organization should therefore make plans and timetables that realistically take into account the time and effort needed to motivate and mobilize the members to work. A “Dictator”cannot provide Synergetic Leadership. As a Dictator, he or she tends to decide everything, and is, if at all, synergizing only the muscles, the physical capabilities of the members. This type of “leader” does not need an organization of human persons and would perhaps do better with an army of robots. Synergetic Leadership is one that continually builds all of The Three Synergies in the entire organization and in every component and operation of this organization. Synergetic leaders would therefore seek to (a) build a leadership team of formal and informal leaders for the entire organization, (b) promote teamwork in all decision-making and task-oriented bodies, committees, chapters and groups by combining, instead of comparing, persons with diverse capabilities; (c) highlight collective achievements at least as much as individual achievements; and (d) continually develop new leaders to join them and eventually replace some or all of them in the leadership team. Leadership in the building and operation of synergy requires the continuing study and application of synergism. Synergetic Leadership can be difficult, especially at first, but it is effective, healthy and sustainable. It is needed by any organization that is serious and earnest in its declared mission or reason for existence. |
